Adjustable arm and swivel designs offer directional control, while integrated LEDs provide consistent, energy-efficient lighting with minimal maintenance.

Installation Tips and Placement

For best results, mount your picture light about one-third of the way down from the top of the artwork, or 5 to 7 inches above the frame. The beam should wash the surface evenly without causing glare. Battery-operated and plug-in options are available for easy installation, while hardwired models offer a cleaner, more permanent setup.

Complete Your Accent Lighting Plan

Picture lights are a subtle but impactful way to personalize your home lighting. Combine them with other focused fixtures like puck lights and step lights from our full Accent Lights collection to create a well-rounded, layered lighting design that enhances both form and function.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are picture lights used for?

Picture lights are wall mounted fixtures designed to illuminate artwork, photographs, mirrors, or other wall displays. They help draw attention to framed pieces and bring out details by casting light directly on the surface.

How do I choose the right picture light for my art or photos?

Choosing the right picture light involves considering the width of the artwork and the size of the frame. A fixture that is slightly wider than the piece helps spread light evenly across the entire surface. The finish and style of the light should also complement the artwork and the room’s decor.

How high should a picture light be installed?

Picture lights are typically mounted above the artwork and positioned so the light spreads downward over the piece. The height should allow the illumination to cover the entire display without creating hot spots or glare. A well positioned fixture enhances the look of the artwork and makes details easier to see.

Can picture lights improve how art looks in a room?

Yes. Picture lights enhance the appearance of artwork by adding focused illumination that brings out colour, texture, and detail. They make wall displays feel more intentional and help them stand out from general room lighting.

Are picture lights suitable for all types of art and frames?

Picture lights work well with a wide range of framed art, prints, and decorative pieces. For very large works or deep frames, choosing a fixture with a broader spread or adjustable design helps ensure the entire piece receives even lighting.

Do picture lights create glare on glass frames

Properly placed picture lights minimize glare by aiming light downward and evenly across the surface. Choosing a fixture with diffused illumination or positioning it at the right angle helps reduce reflection on glass framed pieces.

Are picture lights easy to install?

Installing a picture light typically involves mounting the fixture above the artwork and connecting it to a power source. Many picture lights are designed for straightforward installation. For hardwired setups or more complex wall surfaces it is best to use a licensed electrician.

Can picture lights be used with other lighting in the room?

Yes. Picture lights work well as part of a layered lighting plan. Combining them with general room lighting and accent lights helps create depth and ambiance while giving featured pieces their own dedicated illumination.

How do I maintain a picture light?

Maintaining a picture light involves occasional dusting of the fixture and checking that the bulbs remain bright. Ensuring the mount stays secure and that the light maintains the correct position helps the fixture continue to showcase your artwork effectively.

Can picture lights be dimmable?

Many picture lights can be used with dimmable bulbs or compatible dimmer controls. This lets you adjust the intensity of the art lighting to match the mood of the room, enhance ambience, and draw attention to featured pieces without overwhelming the space.
